The Vampire Diaries revealed a mother of a bombshell when it was uncovered that Katherine was the mother Nadia had been seeking all this time.
For actress Olga Fonda, who plays the enigmatic Nadia, the reveal "was a big surprise," she admits to The Hollywood Reporter. "For us, it is as exciting to shoot every episode as it is for fans to see it, because we don't know ahead of time where the writers are going to take the characters and their stories. There are so many twists and turns and new information."
Fonda talks to THR about Nadia's Katherine connection, uncovering her character's past and Nadia's plan with Gregor and Matt.
How daunting was it when you got the script for last week's episode with the reveal that Katherine was Nadia's mother?
When I read it, it was definitely a pleasant surprise. I did not expect it at all. I thought, what a great twist and what a great journey for both of our characters to go through in the next few episodes.
Was there a moment or line that should have clued you in on Nadia's relation to Katherine?
We didn't know Nadia's agenda, and there was mystery for all of us on why Nadia came to Mystic Falls, but we knew it had to be a very passionate reason, from all the conversations. We knew she was waiting for 500 years and that it was very important for her to be in Mystic Falls to find Katherine, but we didn't necessarily know the story with it. I knew it had something to do with Katherine, but I did not know it would be a mother-daughter story.
Now that they've reunited, how does their relationship change in coming episodes -- or does it?
Now that we have that reveal of Katherine saying that she was looking for Nadia, which I think was such a strong turn for both of the characters, we'll have to see their journey now. It was something that Nadia was looking forward to for so many centuries: Why was she left behind? The history of all of those years, of, "Have you ever thought about me? Who was my dad? Who are my grandparents?" She has questions about those years that she'll want to have answers to. Knowing Katherine, it probably won't be easy to get them right away. They'll have to get to know each other and both of them seeing each other for the first time, and we'll have to see where it'll take them.
It seemed like they warmed up to each other at the end of the episode. Will that continue?
Knowing Katherine, she is a stubborn character. I like to say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, so I'm sure they'll butt heads here and there.
Are you open to revisiting their past, possibly in flashbacks?
For me it would be interesting to see Nadia's story and her past and really find out who she is. To this point, Nadia is still a mystery. We don't know what she went through to get here. We don't know necessarily where she's coming from. We don't know where she traveled to and who she met.
Now that she's found her mother, what is Nadia seeking? Does she have a new goal?
Her position right now, now that she's found something she's been looking for for such a long time, is to get all her answers and have her mother back in her life.
Nadia also has an interesting arc with Matt and Gregor. What can you tease for that storyline?
This won't be the last time we see Matt and Nadia interact. You might find out that they may have some similarities in future episodes. I feel that every time we do a scene, there is some hidden chemistry between those two characters, and it will be interesting to see where that goes.
A romantic connection?
I'm not sure. It's a mystery! (Laughs)
Can you tease a scene or moment from a future episode?
There's a scene in next week's episode [airing Nov. 14] that's going to be really beautiful. It's a scene of Nadia coming to Caroline's room to look for Katherine to talk to Katherine about the future. It's something to look forward to because it's a powerful scene.
